INSTALLATION

Is any assembly required?

Yes. However, the assembly process is quick and easy. All required tools are included with the reel. The assembly process is demonstrated in our video series.

How do I attach the garden hose to the reel?

Our reels offer an innovative and hose-saving method of attaching the hose to the reel. View our hose-to-reel demo video.

Is it easy to install the 1041-GH onto the wall?

How easy the reel installs onto the wall depends a great deal on what type of wall you're mounting it to. Masonry surfaces and stud walls are the most common. Mounting hardware is included with the reel. Stucco walls may be more of a challenge. We have a video tutorial demonstrating the installation of the model 1041-GH onto a lap siding wall.

What's the difference between parallel and perpendicular mountings?

The simple difference is in what direction the hose gets pulled away from the wall. The parallel configuration pulls the hose out along side the wall, while the perpendicular configuration pulls the hose straight away from the wall.

What size are the wall mount anchor bolts and wood screws that come with the reel?

The specs for the mounting hardware supplied with wall mount garden hose reels are as follows:

  • 1/4" x 2" lag wood screws
  • 5/16" x 1-1/2" anchor bolts

What is the best height to mount the reel on the wall?

Because we are only discussing one variable at this time (height), consider the following ergonomic principles: 1)All work activities should permit the worker to adopt several different, but equally healthy and safe postures 2) Where muscular force has to be exerted it should be done by the largest appropriate muscle groups available. 3)Work activities should be performed with the joints at about mid-point of their range of movement. This applies particularly to the head, trunk, and upper limbs. If possible, position the center of the reel six inches below your belt.

What bolts do you recommend for anchoring to a concrete patio?

The brass rivet that holds each foot in place will accept a 1/4" screw. So we suggest a "Lag Screw Anchor" and 1/4" lag screws.

Mounting to shake shingle siding: A dialogue.

Q: I have Atlantic White Cedar shake shingle siding on my house. Should I or should I not use the standoffs with my shingles?
A: Lap siding tends to create a "high center" effect on the base of the reel. The standoffs were design to prevent the base of the reel from crushing the siding. Therefore standoffs are only necessary if the siding prevents a stable mounting surface. Shake siding may require the purchase of stainless steel 5/16" or 3/8" flat washers, in a quantity sufficient to "shim" behind the base of the reel. The idea is to create a stable level mounting surface.

Q: How important is it that the lags be set into studs? I am thinking of attaching one end flush into the vertical board at the corner of the house (where a standoff obviously would not be used) and the other end onto shingles (where a standoff might be needed).
A: It is very important that the mounting hardware engage a stud. It is possible to see 200 lbs of force transferred to the base of the reel.

Q: Does it matter where on the shingle exposure I set the lags...where the shingle slips under the next-up row, or more toward the middle of the shingle?
A: Not really. Regardless of where you locate the lags, use a 3/16" drill bit to create a pilot hole through the shake and into the stud. This will prevent the shake from splitting and ease the entry into the stud.

PRODUCT OPTIONS

Are your reels available in different colors?

No. Rapid Reel garden hose reels are available only in a "Spartan bronze" color. This attractive, neutral bronze color was selected for its unique ability to blend in and look great with almost any color of siding, brick, stucco, wood and other surfaces.

Are longer lengths of inlet hose available?

Our reels come with a 6-1/2 ft. x 5/8" all rubber inlet hose equipped with standard garden hose brass fittings. Currently, we do not offer other lengths of this inlet hose. However, the length of this inlet hose can be extended using one of the two following options:

  1. Add a second inlet hose. You may purchase a second 6-1/2 ft. x 5/8" inlet hose (Part # 0.4301.0130), which can be ordered online from this website, by e-mail or by calling customer service at 1-866-523-2363.
  2. You can purchase a similar hose from a local supplier. The inlet hose attaches to the reel by simply threading it into the brass swivel, similar to any standard garden hose attachment.

Can the 5/8" reel be converted for a 3/4" flow rate?

Yes. All Rapid Reel garden hose reels are sold as 5/8" reels. This is due to the inlet hose, which is a 6-1/2 ft. x 5/8" ID hose. However, our patented brass swivel is already a full flow 3/4" swivel. So to convert the reel for 3/4" flow, simply replace the 5/8" inlet hose with a 3/4" inlet hose of your choosing. You will need to purchase this 3/4" inlet hose (with standard garden hose fittings) from a different source, as Rapid Reel currently does not offer them.

Do you make larger capacity reels?

Yes. We offer an optional Extra-Capacity Kit (Part #1044) that can be added to this model to increase the capacity of standard 5/8" garden hose from 150 feet, up to 225 feet. It will increase the capacity for standard 3/4" hose from 100 feet, up to 175 feet. Click here to view this kit. Capacity requirements greater than 225 feet of 5/8' hose are not feasible for a manual rewind hose reel.

MAINTENANCE & REPAIRS

How do I winterize my garden hose reel?

Winterization is fairly quick and easy. View a demonstration video by clicking here.

Can I repair my reel if it has been damaged by winter freeze?

Yes. Our belief is that quality products should be repairable - not disposable. If your reel is subjected to freeze damage, repairing it can be done quite easily and quickly. The entire plumbing of Rapid Reel garden hose reels consists of an inlet hose and a swivel assembly. Both items are available for purchase.

Is a seal repair kit available for the swivels?

For pressure washer swivels, yes. However, the patented swivel design for the air and garden hose reel swivels was not designed for field repair, mainly because it isn't necessary. The garden swivel comes with a 10-year no-leak guarantee and 3 years for the air swivel . If it leaks during this period, we'll send you a whole new swivel. If it leaks after the warranty period, we recommend that you simply replace it with a new swivel. Go to Replacement Parts.

What maintenance is required or recommended?

Rapid Reel garden hose reels are completely maintenance free. However, if you live in a winter climate, be sure to winterize the reel to protect it from freeze damage.

Is it normal for garden hose reels to make clicking sound when reeling the hose in?

On the TRITON models sold from 2006 through May 2009...yes. The brake is activated when the hose is pulled out, and then brake tension is automatically released during rewind. Its operation is similar to that of a clutch mechanism. The clicking sound during rewind is a result of this innovative design. The current models use an upgraded cam=lever design and do not make a clicking sound.

My garden hose reel seems to be leaking from the "inside" of the axle. What should I do?

This is usually the result of one of the following three circumstances:

  1. The swivel may not be hand-tightened enough to the inlet hose.
  2. The rubber washer may be missing or damaged.
  3. A defect in the swivel.

You can trouble-shoot the first two possibilities by checking the connection between the swivel and inlet hose. To remove the swivel, refer to the "Swivel Removal Procedure" in the Assembly Instruction Manual. It will be located toward the end of the assembly steps. Instruction Manuals can be viewed and download from this website if you no longer have yours. Once you've disengaged the swivel from the reel's axle, then:

  • Unthread the swivel from the inlet hose.
  • Remove and check the condition of the rubber washer.
  • Reinstall the rubber washer (or a new one).
  • Re-tighten the swivel onto the inlet hose.
  • Test the connection by turning on water before reattaching swivel to reel.
  • If the swivel still leaks, contact Customer Service at customerservice@rapidreel.com or 866-523-2363 (toll free).
